Sculptra vs. Filler: What’s the Difference?

Filler adds volume right away, while Sculptra builds your own collagen gradually. Here is how to choose, from the nurse injectors at PURE Medical Spa.

Hyaluronic acid filler adds volume right away, while Sculptra works gradually by helping your body build its own collagen over a few months. Filler is great when you want to see a change the same day, and Sculptra is great when you want a slow, natural looking refresh that can last up to about two years. Many clients use both, and your nurse injector will help you figure out the right mix.

How Each One Works

Sculptra

Sculptra is made of poly-L-lactic acid, a material that has been used in medicine for years, including in dissolvable stitches. It was first FDA approved for aesthetic use in 2009 for smile lines and other facial wrinkles, and in 2023 the FDA expanded its approval to include fine lines and wrinkles in the cheek area. Rather than filling a line directly, Sculptra prompts your skin to make more of its own collagen. As that collagen builds, many clients notice firmer, fuller, more refreshed looking skin.

Hyaluronic Acid Filler

Hyaluronic acid fillers are smooth gels that hold water and add volume exactly where they are placed. They can restore fullness to cheeks, define lips, smooth smile lines, and shape the chin or jawline. One big advantage is that hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved by a provider if an adjustment is ever needed, which gives many first timers peace of mind.

How Fast You See Results

This is the biggest difference between the two. Filler shows a change right away. You may have some swelling or bruising for a few days, and your final result usually settles in within a couple of weeks. Sculptra is a slow build. Right after treatment you may look fuller from the fluid it is mixed with, but that goes down within a few days. Then, over the following weeks and months, collagen gradually builds. Many people see results start to show around a month after treatment, with continued improvement over the course of the series. If you like the idea of nobody being able to point to the day you had something done, Sculptra is a great fit.

How Long It Lasts

Most hyaluronic acid fillers last about 6 to 12 months, though some products and some areas can last longer. Lips tend to wear off sooner than cheeks, for example. Sculptra results can last up to about two years once your series is complete. Neither one is permanent, and your body continues to age, so your provider will talk with you about maintenance. Results vary from person to person.

Who Each One Suits

  • Filler may be a good fit if you want a specific area enhanced, like lips, cheeks, under eye hollows, or chin, and you want to see the change right away.
  • Sculptra may be a good fit if you are noticing overall volume loss, thinning skin, or a tired look, and you are comfortable with gradual results over a few months.
  • Both together is a common plan. Sculptra can rebuild the foundation while filler adds definition where you want it.
Neither treatment is right for everyone. Your nurse injector will review your health history, look at your face as a whole, and give you an honest recommendation.

What About Cost?

The cost of either treatment depends on how much product your face needs and, for Sculptra, how many sessions are in your series. Because every plan is a little different, we keep our pricing in one easy guide. Request our pricing guide and we will send it your way.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Sculptra a filler?

Sculptra is FDA approved as an injectable, but it works differently from a traditional filler. Instead of filling an area directly, it helps your body build its own collagen over time. That is why results show up gradually rather than right away.

Which lasts longer, Sculptra or filler?

Sculptra results can last up to about two years after a completed series. Most hyaluronic acid fillers last about 6 to 12 months, though some can last longer depending on the product and area. Results vary, and your provider will advise on maintenance.

How many Sculptra sessions will I need?

Most people need a series of treatments, often about three sessions spaced several weeks apart. The exact number depends on how much collagen support your face needs. Your nurse injector will build a plan with you at your consultation.

Can I get Sculptra and filler together?

Yes, many clients use both as part of one plan. Sculptra can help with overall volume and skin quality, while filler adds definition to specific areas like lips or cheeks. Your provider will recommend the timing and order that make sense for you.
