Cosmetic Injectables 101: What They Are and How They Work

By Pure Medical Spa

The term “cosmetic injectables” refers to non-surgical cosmetic procedures that involve the injection of substances into the skin to enhance facial features or correct imperfections for more youthful, plump, radiant skin. These treatments have grown in popularity due to their ability to provide quick, minimally invasive results for a variety of cosmetic concerns.

If you are new to dermal fillers and injectables, PURE Medical Spa is here to help. Consider this to be “Cosmetic Injectables 101” so you can discover cosmetic injectables, from what they are to how they work.

Types Of Cosmetic Injectables

Injectables are a popular, safe and effective way to enhance the appearance of your skin. PURE Medical Spa clients love the dramatic, yet natural results. When it comes to Cosmetic Injectables 101, here is an overview of the most common injectables and what they are used for:

  • Dermal fillers are used to add volume to the face, smooth out wrinkles and fine lines, and enhance facial contours. They are typically made of hyaluronic acid or other substances that occur naturally in the body.
  • Botox and Dysport are neurotoxins that temporarily paralyzes the muscles in the face, reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.
  • Kybella is used to reduce the appearance of a double chin by dissolving fat cells in the area.
  • Sculptra is a collagen-stimulating injectable that helps to add volume to the face gradually.

What Are The Benefits of Cosmetic Injectables?

One of the primary benefits of cosmetic injectables is that they can provide natural-looking results. Dermal fillers, for example, can enhance facial features while still maintaining a natural appearance. For example, Botox can provide subtle improvements, resulting in a more youthful and refreshed look without appearing “overdone.”

At PURE, our clients enjoy dramatic, beautiful results from cosmetic injectables without the need for surgical procedures, incisions or general anesthesia. Injectables are performed in-office in a relaxing environment and usually take less than an hour to complete. Additionally, most cosmetic injectables have minimal downtime, allowing clients to resume their normal activities immediately after treatment.

How Cosmetic Injectables Work

At PURE, we work with each client to determine which filler (or a combination of fillers and injectables) will yield the best results for your desired look. Here is a more in-depth look at treatments:

BOTOX® & Dysport®

Botox and Dysport are both injectable neurotoxins that work by temporarily blocking nerve signals to the muscles that cause wrinkles and fine lines. When injected into specific facial muscles, Botox and Dysport cause those muscles to relax, smoothing out wrinkles and reducing the appearance of fine lines.

Both are quick, easy and painless treatment options with results lasting for several months. These injectables can be used for wrinkles and fine lines in the forehead, around the eyes (crow’s feet), around the lips (“lip flip”), on the side of the nose (bunny nose), for marionette lines near the mouth and in the chin to correct dimpling.

Juvederm®

Juvederm is a type of hyaluronic acid-based dermal filler used to restore volume and smooth out wrinkles and fine lines on the face. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the body that helps to keep the skin hydrated and plump and it provides a cushioning effect that adds volume and smooths out wrinkles and fine lines.

Juvederm is used to treat a variety of facial areas, including the cheeks, lips, and nasolabial folds (lines that run from the nose to the corners of the mouth). It can also be used to enhance the lips, giving them a fuller and more defined appearance.

Restylane®

Restylane is a type of hyaluronic acid-based dermal filler used to add volume and smooth out wrinkles and fine lines on the face. It works in a similar way to Juvederm by injecting the hyaluronic acid gel into the skin, where it binds with water molecules to provide a cushioning effect that adds volume and smooths out fine lines and wrinkles.

One unique aspect of Restylane is that there are different formulations designed for specific areas of the face. For example, Restylane Lyft is designed to add volume to the cheeks and midface, while Restylane Silk is designed for lip augmentation and smoothing out fine lines around the mouth.

Sculptra®

Sculptra is a type of injectable dermal filler that contains poly-L-lactic acid, a biodegradable substance that stimulates collagen production in the skin. Unlike other fillers, Sculptra does not provide immediate volume, but rather works gradually over time to stimulate the body’s own natural collagen production.

This gradual approach can lead to more natural-looking results than traditional fillers, which can sometimes appear overfilled or artificial. Sculptra is used to treat a variety of facial areas, including the cheeks, temples, and chin, as well as to fill in deep wrinkles and folds. It is often used as a longer-lasting alternative to other fillers, with results lasting up to two years or more.

KYBELLA®

Kybella is an FDA-approved injectable treatment that is used to reduce submental fat, also known as a “double chin.” It contains a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid, a substance that is naturally produced by the body to help break down and absorb dietary fat.

When Kybella is injected into the submental fat, it destroys the fat cells, which are then naturally eliminated by the body over the course of several weeks. The treatment is typically administered in a series of two to four sessions, spaced several weeks apart, and results in a more defined jawline and a reduction in the appearance of a double chin.

FAQs

When Will I See Results From My Injectables?

For dermal fillers, clients can see results immediately, but the full results can be seen a few weeks later after the dermal fillers have settled and any swelling has subsided. For Sculptra, clients see results throughout the following weeks and months after injections because Sculptra does not provide immediate results like dermal fillers; however, the long-term benefits are well worth the wait.

Can I Combine Cosmetic Injectables With BOTOX?

Yes, you can combine Botox® with fillers. Botox® prevents wrinkles from forming, while fillers can help smooth the wrinkles you have and restore facial volume. We’ve found that Botox® and fillers together can further improve anti-aging results.

Do Injectables and Fillers Hurt?

For most clients, Botox/Dysport and fillers do not hurt. Depending on your preferences, you may opt to use a topical anesthetic to minimize any discomfort. At PURE, we want our clients to feel as comfortable and relaxed as possible during all of their cosmetic treatments.
